How do you determine which churches get listed on the website?
A dictionary definition of "church" is defined as "a body or organization of religious believers." A Christian church is "a body or organization of Christian believers."

All churches listed on our website must meet together regularly, be located within a 35 mile radius of Downtown Austin, and agree with the Nicene Creed. If they do not, they should be removed. Please contact us if you are aware of a church listed on our website that does not espouse this creed.

How do you define a ministry? And, how and why does Above Grounds differentiate ministries from other non-profits that "do good things". Why don't you list all non-profits in Austin?
"Ministry" is from the Greek word diakoneo, meaning "to serve" or douleuo, meaning "to serve as a slave."

The content of ministry should prioritize the ministering in spiritual things, not just practical things. A ministry should place emphasis on sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others so they can come to know Him and receive Him as personal Savior, go on to experience Him as Lord of their life, and go even further to know Christ as the essence of their Life (see John 1:12; Colossians 2:6-7; Galatians 2:20; Philippians 3:8-10). Ministry should include ministering to the spiritual, physical, emotional, mental, vocational, and financial needs of others. Organizations that do not include spiritual Christian ministry are not included on this website. There are thousands of institutions in central Texas that do good things and need volunteers. We hope that Christians in Austin will volunteer to help these institutions. This website lists ministries for the purpose of communicating gospel-sharing opportunities to Christians. Other institutions that serve the city may not have restrictions on sharing the gospel of Jesus, but many do have these restrictions according to internal rules or state and federal laws.

If you are aware of a ministry listed on our website that you do not believe should be listed because of restrictions on sharing the gospel, please contact us.

How do you determine which bands and musicians get listed on the website?
The band must agree with the Nicene Creed. Sometimes there is no way for us to determine this. We always review the band's promotional websites and music, and if it appears they are Christian, then we approve the listing. Their are many types of Christian music, and many "crossover" musicians do not write Christian music, but their music is positive and the musicians are Christian. We approve these types of bands. If you think that a band listed on this website should not be listed, please contact us.

How do you determine which events are allowed to be posted on the calendar? And, why don't you list all citywide events that are family friendly?
The purpose of this calendar is to promote unity among the Christian body in the greater Austin area. We encourage diversity in the type of events posted, and we monitor the calendar daily to maintain the integrity of not only Above Grounds, but also the mission that we are pursuing and all others that are in support of this mission. The types of events posted must be ecumenical in nature. If you would like more information on this topic, please read our terms of use for the city calendar (category C).

We currently do not list all citywide events that are family friendly. There are thousands of great events in Austin throughout the year, but this Austin city calendar is focused on faith-based events. This decision agrees with our mission which is to facilitate communication and action among the Christian community in Austin. For other non-faith-based events in Austin, we advise you to search google with the keywords "austin city calendar" or "austin family events". Or, check out our Austin-area event calendar which includes events not only in Austin, but also cities and towns within a 35-mile radius of downtown Austin.

Do you have volunteer openings?
Yes. Although we exist to promote other ministries in Austin and encourage people to volunteer with ministries on our website, we need the help of additional volunteers. Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering with Above Grounds.
